An introduction to coding and programming.
First things first
If you're trying to understand what coding is all about then you will probably find the following helpful. Ive been a programmer for a quarter of a century and had my first experience of coding back in the early 80's on a friends Sinclair ZX81. Watching my first program run on a black and white portable tv was something i found facinating and it wasnt long before my parents bought me a Commodore VIC 20 and a couple of books to get me started.
The fundimentals haven't really changed since then, you type some words, press go and then the computer does something, it's that simple. Of course there have been huge improvements in programming and coding over the years and there are now hundreds of compuer programming languages with each one having its own character and purpose. General programming languages like "Python" and C# ( C Sharp) have become popular and have very powerful features which make them ideal for learning how to code.
Anyone can learn to code
At any age, learning something new can be a challenge. Computers have had such a huge impact on our everyday lives that it makes good sense to know at least a little about them and how to make them work. If you can use a keyboard then you can program a computer. Creating your first computer program can be an exciting and rewarding experience that can open a door into a new hobby. have fun !
The C# programming language
Microsoft created C# over 20 years ago and intended it to be a general purpose language that was easy to use and incoorporate modern features like threading, inheritance and object oriented capabilites. Its fair to say that it has been exeptionaly succesful and also very popular. C# programs are currently running on millions of computers world wide and is the language of choice for most companies, students and hobbyists due to the enormous amount of resources available. C# can run on Windows, Mac and Linux operating systems.
Where to start ?
I want to show you how easy it is to program a computer and create your own working programs. I orginally created a series of lessons to help my children and now grandchildren to code. The lessons comprise actual C# projects that you can run on your computer. Each level breaks down the jargon so that you can understand exactly how things work. Full instructions on how set up the programming environment are included for both Windows or Mac.
